Dogecoin poised for transformation with zero-knowledge proof proposal

DogeOS, a Dogecoin-based application layer, has submitted a proposal to enhance the blockchain network with native zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) verification, according to a July 22 statement shared with CryptoSlate.

The proposed upgrade, dubbed OP_CHECKZKP, aims to unlock new functionality by enabling smart contract interoperability with Ethereum.

DogeOS is currently building its own Ethereum-compatible zkVM, which would serve as the backbone for this new functionality and enable seamless, trustless interoperability between Dogecoin and Ethereum.

Jordan Jefferson, CEO of DogeOS, described the move as a transformative step towards making Dogecoin “go toe-to-toe with any chain out there.”

Unlocking Dogecoin’s utility

The proposal introduces a new opcode without launching an entirely new virtual machine, maintaining Dogecoin’s simplicity while broadening its use cases. It also paves the way for confidential transactions, cross-chain DOGE bridges, and composable decentralized applications (dApps) on the DogeOS layer.

If implemented, the protocol upgrade would mark a significant shift for Dogecoin, expanding it beyond peer-to-peer payments into a broader smart contract platform capable of supporting DeFi, NFTs, identity protocols, and verifiable gaming applications.

Notably, the integration of ZKPs would also allow for on-chain verification of compact cryptographic proofs, enabling scalability solutions like zk-rollups. This could push Dogecoin’s transaction throughput into the thousands per second while preserving decentralization and reducing fees.

Tim Stebbing, Director of the Dogecoin Foundation, said:

“Dogecoin gaining the ability to integrate with ZK L2s is the kind of interoperability we need to build ecosystem utility, allowing the L1 to focus on being the fastest, best, most fun blockchain and means of exchange for all humanity.”

DogeOS already operates the widely used MyDoge wallet, giving it a direct pathway for distributing the upgrade to users. The team emphasized that the proposal aligns with Dogecoin’s open-source development model and retains its commitment to community values.
