With the @arbitrum founders assembled and a $3.7 M seed round in 2019 to get started, By early 2020, they launched the first testnet, and in October 2020 mainnet, fully open testnet on Ethereum’s Kovan network. Now a 2B MC giant, this is the story how $ARB started 🧵👇 (1/9)

The Origin Story of @arbitrum: began in 2014 at Princeton U. Professor Felten started exploring how blockchain tech could secure online interactions How can he boost blockchain capacity and cut costs? This is how it all came to be... founders story first (1/6) 🧵👇
Developers could deploy Solidity smart contracts on Arbitrum’s testnet with zero modifications, a drop-in scaling solution. This early testnet came complete with token bridge and block explorer, giving a preview of Arbitrum’s promise (90%+ lower fees and faster transactions, all while inheriting Ethereum’s security) (2/9)
coming the shoutout the loudest voices of $ARB moving the space.. @pietehao @heycape_ @honeymoatip @beijingdou @The_Wooo @zer8_future @Yaki_fomoArt @CryptoKaleo @RiddlerNFT @ezeroho8245 @0xMistBlade @elhousesol @iagosnews @ProofOfTravis @7316 @rudolf6_ @Tanaka_L2 @nftmufettisi @Guomin184935 @0xfrigg @blockTVBee @sandeepnailwal @LittleJoker9999 @camolNFT @AliTslm @IoachimViju @0xkydo (3/9)
After a year of refining, @Arbitrum hit the big leagues. In May 2021, Arbitrum One launched in beta for developers, and on August 31, 2021 it opened to the public The debut was huge, over 400 projects had lined up to deploy on day 1 . Ethereum favorites like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and Aave were among the first, eager to escape sky-high gas fees on L1. Arbitrum One’s launch proved the team could deliver: it instantly slashed fees ~90% and boosted throughput by orders of magnitude , all while being fully EVM-compatible (developers didn’t have to change a single line of solidity code) (4/9)
Big Backers & Funding: @Arbitrum’s momentum caught investors’ attention. Offchain Labs’s journey is backed by ~$123 M in funding . It started with Pantera Capital leading that $3.7 M seed in 2019 . By April 2021, as the tech neared launch, they raised a $20 M Series A. And right after mainnet, they announced a $100 M Series B led by Lightspeed Venture Partners – a round that included Polychain Capital, Ribbit, Redpoint, Pantera, Mark Cuban and others, valuing Offchain Labs at a cool $1.2 B (hello, unicorn status 🦄!). With this war chest, Offchain Labs expanded its team and doubled down on R&D. The infusion of capital helped ensure Arbitrum stayed ahead of the pack in the Layer-2 race. (5/9)
The team didn’t rest after launch. Exactly one year later (Aug 31, 2022), they unleashed @Arbitrum Nitro, a massive technical upgrade Nitro revamped Arbitrum’s underlying architecture, integrating a new prover, updated fraud proofs, and migrating Arbitrum’s VM to more efficient code (rewriting the compiler in Go) In plain English: Nitro boosted Arbitrum’s throughput and cut fees even further. The upgrade was executed seamlessly (just a couple hours of planned downtime ). Suddenly Arbitrum could handle even more complex workloads and traffic. This was a big leap forward in performance and cemented Arbitrum’s reputation for shipping tech that works. (6/9)
Same year, Offchain Labs introduced a second network Arbitrum Nova While Arbitrum One remained the go-to for DeFi and NFTs, Nova was designed for ultra-low cost and high volume (think gaming, social apps, Reddit-scale communities). Nova uses Arbitrum’s new AnyTrust technology, a more centralized (but super-cheap) chain secured by a data committee In August 2022 Nova went live, and Reddit chose Nova for its Community Points program That meant millions of Reddit users started indirectly using Arbitrum for things like r/CryptoCurrency Moons and r/FortNiteBR Bricks. Nova’s launch showed Arbitrum isn’t just a one-trick pony; it’s an ecosystem of scaling solutions tailored to different needs (7/9)
In October 2022, the team made a headline move – acquiring Prysmatic Labs, one of Ethereum’s core development teams (they built Ethereum’s most popular Proof-of-Stake client) This was a strong signal that Offchain Labs is here for the long haul, investing in Ethereum’s base infrastructure as well. They’ve also continued innovating on Arbitrum: developing Stylus (a tool to let devs write Arbitrum contracts in Rust, C, C++), and Orbit (letting anyone launch their own Layer-3 chains using Arbitrum’s tech). Offchain Labs started as a scrappy Princeton spin-off, but now it’s a key player in Ethereum’s scalability, steering a whole family of products and initiatives (8/9)
What started as an academic idea in a Princeton lab is now @Ethereum’s scaling superstar @Arbitrum’s story, from Felten’s 2014 brainstorming, to a 2018 prototype, to a live network in 2025 that’s become critical infrastructure, shows how innovation moves from lab bench to mainstream adoption. To @apecoin launching its apechain on it and then $ANIME chain. And the founders are still driving it forward: Felten, Goldfeder, and Kalodner remain deeply involved, now alongside a growing team and community With major upgrades on the horizon and Layer-2 competition heating up, Arbitrum is poised to keep evolving. One thing’s for sure: this super-scaler network has come a long way, and it’s not slowing down any time soon (9/9)
